I will have it built by a designer and he will also do the programming.
I was under the impression that all i needed was a domain and hosting and i would be ready to roll..
However, im seeing that may not be the case.
The site will be mostly informational, less than 10 pages.. with maybe a paypal or google checkout for one item. Pretty simple im guessing.
My questions are…
Do i need a virtual server (dedicated or otherwise)?
How much hosting space do i need? Will the basic do?

It’s up to the designer. It depends on how he implements it. In a lot of cases, just regular hosting will be enough. Just make sure they have ssh access (root access may not be necessary, ask your coder though). If you do need root access, get a virtual server (it’s a lot cheaper than a virtual server). And you need a domain either way.

That will be up to you, not the designer. But no that is really simple. you don’t need a server of any kind. If someone tell you that you do, come they are tellong you a lie.

You’re selling 1 item. I doubt if you will have a bandwidth problem there. 10 pages are a drop in the bucket. Site doesn’t have to offer lots of space, but always plan for expansion. Any expansion could entail using more bandwidth if your site become popular.

Since you are using a Payment Gateway with PayPal, you will NOT need a dedicated server (expensive) as PayPal will provide the secure checkout. If you decide you want to accept Credit Cards, then you’ll need to rethink the site’s set up or install a Pro eCommerce package. Many are already to be installed if you check through your Control Panel. In fact, the CP will have the PayPal Setup Utility provided you got a proper hosting service.
